There is a good article on the chickenpit story in today's KnoxNews. It details how one entreprenuer bought the property for $100,000 a few years ago and how one night that the FBI was at a fight, over $60,000 was collected in membership dues and entrance fees. That goes a long way towards retiring ye old mortgage.
At the other site (which was bought for $20,000) over $2 million dollars was wagered one evening. That takes a lot of ciphering to keep straight. Sounds like a profitable business to me.

Two items....
First the (rough) quote from the woman in Cocke County who said "If they shut down the chicken fights our kids and teenagers won't have anything to do...they'll be out on the streets, no telling what trouble they can get into.."
Second. To make a wager at the cockfight you stand up and announce your choice and the amount of your wager. No paper, no computer, no third party verification. If you win the other party pays, if you lose you pay. Honor system. Well, that and the very real threat of bodily harm if you welch. Please do not bet more than you have in cash. Checks not accepted.
